The Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board (MPESB), earlier known as the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) and popularly called Vyapam, is the single authority that fills most non gazetted government posts in the state. Every year it releases recruitment notifications for clerical, technical, police, forest, revenue, nursing and teaching posts, conducts the written exams, manages the online applications and fee payments, releases the admit cards, and finally declares the results and merit lists. If you are aiming for a government job in Madhya Pradesh, almost every road passes through this board, so understanding how its recruitment system works is the first real step in your preparation.

MPESB recruitment is organised in two ways. Most posts are grouped by their level into Group 1 through Group 5, and the rest are run as department specific recruitments such as Police Constable, Forest Guard, Jail Prahari and teacher recruitment linked to the MP TET. Knowing which group or department your target post belongs to matters, because the qualification, age limit, exam pattern and fee can change from one group to another. The sections below break this down clearly so you can find your exam quickly and apply with confidence.

Understanding the MPESB recruitment groups

The group system is simply a way of sorting posts by the level of education and responsibility they need. Once you know your group, you know roughly what qualification is required and what kind of exam to expect.

GroupType of postsUsual qualification
Group 1Officer and managerial postsProfessional or postgraduate degree
Group 2Administrative and supervisory posts, includes Patwari (Sub Group 4)Graduate degree, CPCT where asked
Group 3Selected technical and support postsDiploma or graduate level
Group 4Clerical, steno and assistant postsClass 12 plus CPCT
Group 5Nursing and paramedical postsRelevant nursing or paramedical qualification

Group 4 is by far the most popular because it has the widest reach. It covers data entry operators, stenographers, assistants grade 3 and similar clerical roles across many departments, and most of these need a Class 12 pass along with a valid CPCT (Computer Proficiency and Certification Test) score. Group 1 sits at the other end, with posts that demand a professional degree such as engineering or a postgraduate qualification, and these naturally have fewer vacancies and tougher competition. Group 2 is the bridge between them, holding graduate level administrative posts, and it is where the Patwari recruitment lives under Sub Group 4. Open the detailed guides for Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, Group 4 and Group 5 to see the exact posts and rules for each.

Department specific recruitments

Alongside the groups, MPESB runs some of the biggest recruitments in the state for specific departments. The MP Police Constable exam is the headline event, often filling several thousand posts in a single cycle. It is open to candidates with a Class 10 pass, with relaxation to Class 8 for ST candidates, while Radio (technical) posts need Class 12 plus an ITI certificate, and the age band is 18 to 33 years. The full breakdown is in the Police Constable recruitment guide.

The Forest Guard and Jail Prahari recruitment is another large department exam, with a written test followed by a physical test, again in the 18 to 33 age band. Read the Forest Guard recruitment guide for the post wise detail. The Patwari, a village level revenue officer, is recruited under Group 2 Sub Group 4 and needs a graduate degree plus a CPCT certificate. See the Patwari recruitment guide. On the education side, MPESB conducts the MP TET teacher eligibility tests and the linked teacher recruitment, including the large Varg 3 primary teacher cycle, while nursing aspirants have both the Nursing Officer recruitment under Group 5 and the PNST entrance test for nursing admission.

MPESB recruitments that are live or recent

The figures below give a snapshot of the recruitments that are active or recently concluded. Vacancy counts and dates change whenever the board revises a notification, so treat this as a starting point and always confirm on the official site before you act.

Eligibility you must check before applying

Three things decide whether you can apply: education, age and domicile. The education requirement depends on the post, ranging from Class 8 or 10 for some police posts up to a graduate or postgraduate degree for higher groups. Always read the exact qualification clause in the notification, including any requirement for a CPCT certificate, an ITI certificate or a specific subject background.

The age limit also varies. Many group posts use an 18 to 40 year band, while police, forest and jail posts use a tighter 18 to 33 year band. Reserved categories of Madhya Pradesh and certain other groups get age relaxation as per state rules. The detail is in the age limit guide. Domicile matters too, because several benefits, including the reduced application fee and category relaxation, apply mainly to candidates who hold a Madhya Pradesh domicile and valid category certificates. The reservation rules guide explains how SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwD and women benefits are applied.

Application fees

The fee depends on the post and your category, and the reserved category concession is generally limited to Madhya Pradesh residents. Backlog vacancy posts usually carry no fee.

CategoryMost postsGroup 1PNST
General / UnreservedRs 500Rs 560Rs 400
SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwD (MP)Rs 250Rs 310Rs 200

On top of the exam fee there is a portal charge of about Rs 60 at an MP Online kiosk or Rs 20 for a registered citizen user. Payment can be made online by debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI, and you should always save the payment receipt and the final confirmation page.

Exam pattern and selection process

The core stage for almost every MPESB recruitment is a computer based test, typically of 100 marks with 100 objective questions to be solved in 2 hours, set in Hindi and often in English as well. The common subjects include General Knowledge and current affairs, General Hindi, General English, Mathematics, Reasoning, General Science and Computer Knowledge, with technical and nursing posts adding subject specific sections. A very important point is normalisation: when an exam is held across several shifts, MPESB applies Normalised Equi-Percentile scaling so that candidates who attempt easier or harder shifts are judged fairly. This means your final score is a percentile, which can differ from your raw marks, and the merit list is built on this percentile.

Beyond the written test, the selection process adds stages depending on the post. Police, forest and jail posts include a Physical Standard Test and a Physical Efficiency Test, typing and steno posts include a skill test, and shortlisted candidates across all posts go through document verification, with physical roles also requiring a medical examination. The end to end flow is explained in the selection process guide, and it is worth reading before you start preparing so you can train for every stage, not just the written paper.

How to apply for an MPESB recruitment

The application is fully online and follows the same broad steps for every exam. First, create a one time candidate profile on the portal, completing the Aadhaar based verification and saving your registration ID. Then, when the notification you want is live, log in, open the application form, and read the notification carefully to confirm your eligibility, the fee and the important dates. Fill the form so that every detail exactly matches your documents, upload your photo, signature and handwritten declaration in the required format, pay the fee, and submit. Always download the confirmation page and keep the application number safe.

  1. Create or log in to your candidate profile on esb.mp.gov.in.
  2. Open the form for your target recruitment.
  3. Confirm eligibility, age limit, fee and dates from the notification.
  4. Fill personal, education and category details exactly as on documents.
  5. Upload photo, signature and declaration in the asked format.
  6. Pay the fee online or at an MP Online kiosk.
  7. Submit and download the confirmation, and use the correction window if you spot an error.

Tip: Most MPESB exams open a short correction window after the deadline. Note those dates while applying, because some fields can only be fixed during that window.

Salary and growth

Pay depends on the post and its pay level. Many clerical and constable posts fall in the Rs 19,500 to Rs 62,000 band, with allowances such as Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Travel Allowance added on top, while officer level Group 1 posts sit at higher pay levels. Most posts come with pension coverage, periodic increments and promotion paths, which is a large part of why these jobs are so sought after. The salary structure guide gives the level wise detail.

Documents you should keep ready

Whichever recruitment you target, the same core documents are needed at the application stage and again at document verification. Keeping them ready in advance saves you from last minute stress when a short application window opens. Prepare scanned copies in the size and format the portal asks for, and keep the originals safe for verification.

  • Recent passport size photograph and a clear signature in the required dimensions.
  • Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates, and your graduation degree where the post needs it.
  • A valid identity proof such as Aadhaar, and your date of birth proof.
  • Category certificate (SC, ST, OBC, EWS) and a Madhya Pradesh domicile certificate where you are claiming benefits.
  • CPCT certificate or ITI certificate where the post requires it.
  • A handwritten declaration in the format the form specifies.

Common application mistakes to avoid

Small errors in the application cause big problems later, because the details you enter are matched against your documents at verification. The most common mistakes are a spelling difference between the form and the certificates, a wrong date of birth, an incorrect category selection, and uploading a photo or signature that does not meet the format rules. Another frequent slip is missing the correction window, which is often the only chance to fix certain fields. Fill the form slowly, check every entry against your documents, and use the correction window to review everything once more before the final submission.

Tips to improve your selection chances

Beyond studying the syllabus, a few habits raise your odds across any MPESB recruitment. Apply early so you have time to fix upload issues, and never wait for the last day, when portals are slow. Read the full notification, not just the summary, so you do not miss an eligibility condition. Give real weight to Madhya Pradesh General Knowledge, since it appears reliably and often decides close cut offs. For posts with a physical test, start training the day you apply, not after the written result. And keep your documents organised in one folder so you can respond quickly when verification is announced. These simple steps protect the hard work you put into your preparation.
